General Tips For India & Nepal Travel
- A tour to India or Nepal can be a wee bit unnerving for first-time visitors. The lifestyle and culture are totally different from those of Western countries. I have prepared a list of some important things for hassle-free and enjoyable travel in India and Nepal.
- A valid visa to enter and stay in India and Nepal is a must. There have been reported cases where travellers were advised by their travel agents that an Indian or Nepalese visa was not required. Practically every foreign national requires a visa to enter these countries.
- Do not encourage beggars.
- Do not trust strangers with your money. Trust your hotel, but be cautious with people you may encounter on the streets.
- Do not offer bribes to get any job done. Bribe-taking and bribe-giving are common practices in India, but they are intended to speed up processes or obtain a favour that you may not otherwise be entitled to. Plan well in advance and use reputable consultants or trade and industry associations when required.
- If you expect a favour, let it be offered freely or not at all. If anyone, including a government official, asks you for a bribe, inform them that you would report the matter to the Anti-Corruption Bureau or the nearest police station. If the person persists, report the matter discreetly to the appropriate authorities.
- Indian English has its own unique characteristics, especially for foreign visitors. Do not show amusement at different Indian accents or expressions. This does not take away from the fact that many Indians speak and write excellent English.
- It is advisable to have travel insurance covering theft, loss, medical expenses and other unforeseen circumstances.
- Carry proper maps of the places you plan to visit in India and Nepal, as signboards may sometimes be absent. Try to reach a railway station during daylight hours if travelling on your own. In any case, avoid persistent touts and taxi drivers at airports, railway stations and bus stands who offer to help you find your hotel. Always use the tourist assistance desk for reliable advice.
- Women travelling alone should avoid walking through deserted places at odd hours and should take appropriate safety precautions.
- While exchanging money, always insist on receiving an encashment certificate or receipt.
- Do not check out of your hotel in a hurry. While checking out, it has been noticed that in some hotels, additional charges may be added to the bill. Take your time to review the bill carefully before making the payment.
- Do not leave cash or valuables in your hotel room. Keep your cash divided and stored in different secure places.
- Always dispose of your rubbish properly, whether you are exploring the desert, the Himalayas, beaches or any other destination.
- Do not accept invitations to visit anyone's home unless you are confident and comfortable with the person.
- Use licensed and authorized guides for sightseeing.
- Always use sturdy suitcases and baggage, as luggage may be handled roughly at airports and railway stations.
- Do not tip unreasonably or unnecessarily at hotels. Excessive tipping may create unrealistic expectations for additional tips during the remainder of your stay.
- During the monsoon season, avoid staying overnight in the desert while on a camel safari.
