Srirangapatnam – Capital of Tipu Sultan. An island site in the Kaveri River, Srirangapatnam, 12km from Mysore, has been home to religious reformers and military might since the 10th century. Vishnu Sri Ranganathasvam Temple, from which the town’s name is

derived, is in fact older than the town and fort. In the 18th century, the fort, originally built by the Vijayanagar kings, became the capital for Haidar Ali. Upon his father’s demise, Tipu Sultan also used the fort as his headquarters.

Within triple fortifications, most of which were destroyed by the British, are the Jama Masjid, the Daria Daulat Bagh (summer palace) and the Gumbaz, all built by Tipu Sultan. The summer palace, built in 1784, has colourful frescoes, ornamental arches and gilded paintings on the teak wood walls; the palace in its garden setting is beautiful. The museum houses some of Tipu Sultan’s possessions as well as some 19th-century artwork. The Gumbaz (the family mausoleum) was built in memory of Haider Ali.

Arrive in Mysore and check in at the hotel. In the evening, visit Brindavan Gardens – which lies adjoining the Krishnarajasagara Dam, which is built across the river Kaveri. It is spread across an area of 60 acres. Adjoining it is also a fruit orchard spread across 75 acres and 02 horticultural farms, Nagavana (30 acres) and Chandravana (5 acres).

Mysore – Mysore, Karnataka’s second largest city, is famous for royal palaces, gardens, silks and sandalwood. With shady avenues and a pleasant climate, this elegant city, with its fading grandeur and stunningly opulent architecture, is also the perfect place for leisurely shopping.

Mysore Palace –The Palace of the Maharaja, designed by Henry Irwin was built in 1897 after the old wooden palace was destroyed in a fire. One of the largest palaces in the country and beautifully restored it houses many art treasures, wall paintings and ivory inlaid doors. The palace is a harmonious synthesis of Hindu and Saracenic styles of architecture with archways, domes, turrets, colonnades and sculptures, all of which are magnificent. Later Visit the Chamarajendra Art Gallery with its collection of Indian miniatures and numerous artifacts. At the top of Chamundi hill to the southeast of the city is Chamundeshwari Temple. Dedicated to Durga the temple celebrates her victory over the buffalo god. On a clear day the views from this vantage point are wonderful. Overnight Hotel.

Day 5
Mysore – Hassan(115 Kms/3 Hrs)

Belur – The Hoysalas, who ruled a large kingdom between the Krishna and Kaveri Rivers, made Belur their first capital. Patrons of art and lovers of all things cultural, they encouraged competition between master craftsmen, and after their victory over the Cholas at Talakad, they built the Chennakesavara Temple. Dedicated to Krishna, the temple, built over 900 years ago, is an exquisite example of Hoysala architecture and is embellished with numerous carvings and beautifully intricate details. Also worth visiting are the Jain Bastis, a few km away.

Halebid –Dvarasamudra, the ancient capital of the Hoysala Empire, 39km from Hassan, was renamed Halebid (old city) after it was attacked by the Delhi Sultanate in 1327. With two shrines dedicated to Shiva and stunning half-life-size statues of Hindu deities, Halebid’s exquisitely carved in the 12th century, Hoysaleswara Temple is the main draw to this town. The Kedareswara Temple, although smaller and simpler in design, is also remarkable for its (lathe-turned) multi-faceted pillars.

Day 6

Breakfast Drive to Hospet Overnight

Day 7
Hospet - Hampi - Hospet

Hampi – Following breakfast at the hotel, proceed for a same-day excursion to Hampi – With its monopoly on the trade of cotton and spices was incredibly wealthy. With ornate palaces plated in gold, opulent temples and markets full of luxury goods, the seat of the Vijayanagara Empire rivalled Rome in its grandeur. Known as Vijayanagara (‘the town of victory’), the boulder-strewn site was strategically chosen, and the ingenious skill of the master craftsmen’s architecture blended their buildings into the landscape. Destroyed by the Deccan Sultans in 1565, the 26sq km site sits on the banks of the Tungabhadra River and is one of India’s most impressive historical sites.  Notable amongst the many ruins are the Virupaksha Temple with its 9-storey gopuram and the Vitthala Temple dedicated to Vishnu. It is now a World Heritage Monument. The Queen’s Bath that measures an impressive 15m long, has interesting stucco work around it and was filled from beautiful lotus-shaped fountains.
